HIV/AIDS
We perform basic studies on human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the major causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), in order to accumulate an information to develop HIV vaccines and novel anti-HIV compounds. In addition, we attempt to reveal the virological and immunological characteristics of the Southeast Asian strains of HIV-1, as well as perform sero- and molecular epidemiological studies to reveal the HIV-1 prevalence rate and the genotypic characteristics of currently circulating viral strains in Southeast Asia. These research projects are conducted in a collaboration with an oversea research collaboration center of Kobe University established in Indonesia. Through such collaborative research projects, we aim to accumulate an information which may contribute to the implementation of HIV/AIDS countermeasures in Sotheast Asia.

Dengue
We perform basic studies on dengue viruses type 1-4, which are causative agents of dengue and severe dengue, in order to reveal the detailed replication mechanism as well as to develop novel antiviral compounds, vaccines and rapid diagnistic methods. In addition, we perform a molecular epidemiological study to monitor currently circulating viral strains in a collaboration with the Indonesian research collaboration center of Kobe University.

COVID-19
We started basic researches on the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), such as the establishment of a coronavirus replicon system, analysis of viral replication mechanism, measurement of neutralization activity of vaccine candidates, evaluation of viral inactivation methods, etc.
