インターゲノミクスセミナーが、平成29年6月20日（火曜）に開催されました。今回は日本学術振興会の外国人招へい研究の一環として、トウモロコシの遺伝育種学の分野でご活躍のFlint-Garcia先生に講演をお願いしました。
トウモロコシの栽培や進化、最近の育種にはどうしても馴染みが薄いのですが、トウモロコシの栽培化やF1ハイブリッドや雑種強勢のこともしっかりと紹介していただきました。次に大規模な実験集団をトウモロコシ自殖系統だけでなく、トウモロコシの野生種であるテオシンテ(Teosinte)も使って養成し、一部については遺伝子同定も成功しました。雑種強勢だけでなく自殖弱勢についても分析し、その原因の一端が見えてきたようです。他の植物への参考になる展開が見えてきたと思いました。

During this visit, I met with world experts in plant genetics and genomics, and became familiar with Asian culture and genetics. I developed an especially strong connection with researchers at Kobe who work on wild relatives of rice in projects very similar to my work on wild relatives of maize. I feel that our group will benefit by enhanced research relationships between USDA-ARS and Japanese institutions for two of the world’s most important commodities: corn, rice, wheat, Chinese cabbage and other plant species. Improved research is critical to continued corn improvement in the U.S. and worldwide.
