My Research Statement

Robots interact with real environment like humans and other creatures. In virtual reality, on the other hand, a human is placed in a virtual environment instead of the real environment. In this sense, robotics and VR have a complementary or mirroring relationship.

In teleoperation, a slave robot interacts with a real environment, while a human operator operates the slave robot, interacting with a virtualized environment at the master site. In this sense, teleoperation is a bridge cross-linking robotics and VR.

Through these three major research fields, i.e., robotics, VR, and teleoperation, we are trying to understand how humans interact with real environments, and to realize human functions in the engineering manner based on the essential understandings of humans.

We are also emphasizing application-driven researches as well as the basic researches, expecting mutual feedback between these two research categories.
