JST Emergent research support program
・The JST Emergent Research Support Program aims to foster disruptive innovation within Japan by providing sustained financial and logistical support for original, ambitious research with the potential to drive innovation. We welcome bold research proposals with trans-formative potential.
・The Office of Research Management (URA) offers support in refining application materials, along with individual consultations. We also provide online consultation sessions. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about the application process or for guidance on developing a research concept aligned with the program’s objectives.

Areas Covered | Open to all fields related to science and technology with potential for disruptive innovation, excluding purely humanities-related research. |
Application period | August 19th (Monday) to October 10th (Thursday) at noon |
How to Apply | Researchers should submit applications directly to JST via e-Rad by the specified deadline. No internal submission or recommendation is necessary. |
Eligibility | Generally, applicants should have earned their doctorate within the last 15 years as of April 1, 2024 (i.e., after April 2, 2009). Considerations will be made for life events (e.g., childbirth, childcare, eldercare). Applicants must also have received or currently be receiving research funding for independent research within the past two years (2022 or 2023). |
Research period | Phase 1 (3 years), with potential progression to Phase 2 (additional 4 years), totaling up to 7 years. All projects begin in Phase 1, with a stage-gate review before Phase 2. |
Research Funding | 7 years: Total direct costs 50 million yen (maximum) Phase 1: Total direct costs 20 million yen (maximum) |

Research Ethics Training
